The court observed while disposing of the petitions that it was satisfied that the state government had disbursed the amount received from the Centre for riot victims who were eligible for additional ex gratia relief.

In an affidavit filed on August 8, 2011, the state government had stated that there were 38 applications pending from amongst the applications received after March 2011.

During the hearing on Wednesday, the court directed the state government to expeditiously dispose of all pending applications for relief from riot victims whose names existed on the government's list. However, the court did not make any comments or issue directions regarding claims made by people whose names were not on the state government's list.

"It would not be permissible to direct the state government to accept subsequent claims of persons whose names never existed on the state list of riot victims," the court said.
