Congress stalwart and former Union Minister Subodh Kant Sahay is again trying out his luck from Ranchi despite heavy loss in 2014. In 2014, he was trounced by nearly two lakh votes by BJP's Ram Tahal Chaudhary. Cut to 2019, Chaudhary is contesting as independent after being denied ticket by BJP. The five-time MP has vowed to destroy his former party. Contesting against Chaudhary and Subodh-who is also three-time MP is BJP's Sanjay Pandey. Businessman by profession, Pandey is chairman of state Khadi board and has the solid backing of the trader community. He is also well known in urban pockets but is virtually an unknown commodity in the rual areas of Ranchi Lok Sabha constituency. BJP will hope that successful implementation of several central schemes in Jharkhand would bear fruit and people will vote for the symbol irrespective of the candidate. A big headache for BJP will be the division of Kurmi votes owing to Ram Tahal Chaudhary's candidature. Being a leader of OBC- Kurmi community, he is expected to pull significant vote which is likely to bleed BJP. Kurmis are over 30% of the population in Ranchi. Sensing opportunity, Sahay has gone all out in campaigning. A united opposition in Jharkhand is also helping his cause. Historically, Congress has won the seat eight times, and BJP four times. The assembly segments under Ranchi are Ichagarh, Silli, Khijri. Ranchi, Hatia and Kanke. Five out of these six constituencies are with BJP currently.Polling for 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Jharkhand is being held in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh phases of polling - on April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19 - respectively. BJP won 12 out of the 14 seats in 2014, JMM got the remaining 2. Counting is on May 23.
