Shatayu, a non-profit body working to raise awareness about organ donation, is organising a motorbike rally on September 26 for the same. Around 500 bikers are expected to participate in the rally.

The rally will begin from Rajpath Club and pass through Nehrunagar, Manekbaug, Paldi and Ashram Road to reach Gandhi Ashram. It will then return to the club — this time via Usmanpura under-bridge, Stadium, IIMA and Judges Bungalow Road - for a short informative seminar on organ donation.

"I am alive today only because of the heart transplant surgery I underwent at Cape Town in South Africa on October 19, 2004," said 43-year-old Deepak Patel, an Ahmedabad builder, who is the founder and chairman of Shatayu. "When I came back, I founded this organisation to create awareness about the urgent need for more organ donations in this country."

Shatayu in-charge, Alkesh Patel, said that their organisation was just one year old but it already had 500 registered members. "Our aim is to educate people about organ donation," he said. "People ought to know that only 'brain dead' patients can donate organs. We want to tell them that religious considerations should not come in the way of organ donations."

Dr HL Trivedi, director of the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Institute of Transplantation Sciences, Ahmedabad, said that currently 5-6 hospitals in the city have patients waiting for organ transplants. "Organs today are provided to patients whenever they are available with hospitals," he said. "This is not the ideal situation."
