Congress president Rahul Gandhi (48) on Saturday offered to resign after the embarrassing defeat of his party in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. However, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) members unanimously rejected his resignation. Top Congress leaders from across the country got together to review the party’s defeat in the Lok Sabha polls. The CWC has requested Gandhi to retain his role as party president and “completely overhaul and restructure” the grand old party.

Speaking to the media, former Defence Minister AK Antony said, “I don’t agree that it was a disastrous performance, but we were not able to rise up to the expectations. The party will discuss this in details. Today, we had only general discussions.”

The CWC meeting was attended by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Uttar Pradesh (East) in-charge Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and chief ministers of four party-ruled states — Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh — and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Sources said that Rahul is adamant on his decision of resigning. He reportedly said that he would continue to work as a ‘soldier of the Congress’ and the Congress president could be somebody else.

Addressing the media after the CWC meeting, senior Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said that the CWC had unanimously rejected Rahul Gandhi’s offer to resign. “We need Rahul Gandhi to guide us in these challenging times,” Surjewala said.
