Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath has refused to apologise for his controversial "item" jibe at BJP leader Imarti Devi.

The senior Congress leader said that he has already explained in what context the remarks were made. The defiance from Kamal Nath comes despite former party president Rahul Gandhi calling the statement ‘inappropriate’.

While speaking to the media Kamal Nath said, "It is Rahul Gandhi`s opinion. I have already clarified the context in which I made that statement... Why should I apologise when I did not intend to insult anyone? If anyone felt insulted, I have already expressed regret," Kamal Nath said.

Speaking to reporters in Wayanad this morning, Rahul Gandhi expressed displeasure over the language used by former Chief Minister Kamal Nath.

"Kamal Nath Ji is from my party but personally, I don`t like the type of language that he used...I don`t appreciate it, regardless of who he is. It is unfortunate," Rahul Gandhi said.

Kamal Nath on Sunday had triggered a furore after he called the BJP minister Imarti Devi an “item”. The remarks were made by Nath at an election meeting in the Dabra assembly constituency in Gwalior district

"Suresh Raje ji hamare ummeedvar hai...yeh uske jaise nah hai...kya hai uska naam ... main kya uska naam lun? ...apko toh mujhe pehle savdhan karna chahiye tha ... yeh kya item hai... (Our candidate is not like her... what`s her name? You know her better and should have warned me earlier... What an item!), Kamal Nath made the statement in Hindi.

The former CM was campaigning for Congress candidate Suresh Raje for the Dabra by-election. Imarti Devi is also contesting on the BJP ticket from Dabra.
