Former state minister and Kerala Congress (B) leader R Balakrishna Pillai, serving jail term in a corruption case, is being fielded as a UDF candidate to contest the April 13 polls to Kerala assembly.

The Steering Committee of KC (B), which met in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, decided to field Pillai from his pocketborough Kottarakkara in Kollam district.

The party will also be putting up a dummy candidate in its traditional seat in case Pillai's nomination was rejected due to legal reasons.

The party also decided to re-nominate Pilla's son and cine actor Ganesh from his Pathanapuram, also in Kollam.

Pillai was lodged in the central prison here a month ago after the Supreme Court sentenced him to one year imprisonment in a corruption case relating to awarding of contract for construction of a tunnel and a surge shaft of Edamalayar Hydro Electric project in 1980s when he was electricity minister in the UDF government headed by late K Karunakaran.
