Moral policing has returned to haunt the women in Kashmir with anonymous posters surfacing in Srinagar, warning women against not observing purdah.
The posters in Urdu, titled Hijab Mukamal Karo (sport the veil), depicting pictures of women covering their head and face, were pasted on the walls of a Christian missionary school, taxi stands and other places in the usually busy Lal Chowk.
The posters, which carried translated verses of Quran about the hijab and purdah have surfaced despite the presence of policemen, on duty in the city to prevent any untoward incident during the Indo-Pak semi-final clash. “We have not seen the posters as yet. Let me check it,” Shiv Murari Sahai, inspector general of police, Kashmir range, said.
