Sen, Maoist ideologue Narayan Sanyal and Kolkata-based businessman Piyush Guha were sentenced to life imprisonment by a Raipur court on December 24 for sedition and colluding with Maoists to establish a network to fight the state.
The life sentence given to rights activist Binayak Sen was in violation of human and democratic rights, CPI general secretary AB Bardhan today said.
"The punishment awarded to Sen by a Chhatisgarh court was not justified," he told reporters in Patna.
Sen, Maoist ideologue Narayan Sanyal and Kolkata-based businessman Piyush Guha were sentenced to life imprisonment by a Raipur court on December 24 for sedition and colluding with Maoists to establish a network to fight the state.
Sen, a paediatrician by training and the national vice-president of People's Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL), had been accused by the prosecution of carrying messages and letters from Sanyal to Maoists. Guha too was found involved in helping Maoists to establish the network.
