Some unidentified men have placed Sambhaji Maharaj's statue at the same place in the garden from where the Ram Ganesh Gadkari statue was removed
Little over two years after the statue of Marathi playwright Ram Ganesh Gadkari was removed from Sambhaji Garden, Pune, some unidentified men have placed Sambhaji Maharaj's statue at the same place in the garden from where the Gadkari statue was removed.
According to police, a few men entered the garden at around 3 am on Tuesday and placed the statue of Sambhaji Maharaj in the garden.
The men also pasted a paper with a message on it which reads that they belong to an organisation from Khed tehsil and it is them who have established the statue of Sambhaji Maharaj there, and if it is removed, there will be aggressive consequences across the state.
Senior Inspector Bhaskar Jadhav, in charge of Deccan police station, told DNA, "The garden is shut for visitors at around 8 pm every day, after which two security guards keep watch in the garden till the next morning. According to the preliminary information, these men entered into the garden at around 3 am, placed the statue and ran away."
After the security guards informed the police, a team of policemen from Deccan police station reached the garden, seized the statue and took it to the police station.
"We are now trying to identify these men who illegally entered into the garden and placed the statue. We are also checking the CCTV footage," Jadhav said.
Two years back, on January 3, 2017, some men had entered into the garden in a similar manner and they removed the statue of Ram Ganesh Gadkari which was set up in the middle of the garden.
The men had thrown then thrown the statue in the Mutha river which was later recovered.
Sambhaji brigade has claimed the responsibility of removing the statue of Gadkari and since then they have been demanding that only Sambhaji Maharaj's statue should be placed in the garden.
