Pune police restored to lathicharge on the hearing impaired youths who were demonstrating outside the social welfare commissionerate on Monday. Several youths got injured in the lathicharge. 

The organisers of the protest stated that over 10,000 hearing impaired youths from all parts of the state had gathered outside the social welfare commissionerate for their demands such as quality education, job guarantee and others. While they were protesting outside the office, the police who were present to avoid any mishappening, suddenly restored to lathicharge against the protesters. 

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has asked for a detailed report on lathicharge by police on protesters.

According to the protesters, police not only lathicharged them but detained several hearing impaired youths from demonstrating. Pradip More, secretary of the state level deaf association stated that they had gathered at the social welfare commissionerate where the youths were protesting in democratic manner. "When we decided to take out the rally on the road, the police attacked us with sticks The youths got scared as they were not expecting lathicharge. Our several members got injured in the lathicharge."

Police officials stated that they had to restore to 'mild' lathicharge as the protestors were going out of control. "They had the permission for sit in protest but in the afternoon, the protesters decided to carry out a rally and they started removing barricades placed by police. When they tried blocking the entire road for traffic, the police had to restore to mild lathicharge," a police official said. 

Elected representatives of condemned the lathicharge on differently abled persons. Supriya Sule, member of parliament and NCP leader said, "It is really a shameful act by the police to lathicharge on differently abled youths. The chief minister should answer on this issue as he holds the home department."
