Pune: Bajrang Dal activists accost tempo allegedly carrying beef; two handed over to cops

A Bajarang Dal-affiliated vigilante group that focuses on cow protection caught a temp allegedly carrying nearly six tonnes of beef in Pimpri area on the outskirts of Pune in Maharashtra. The temp driver and his partner were arrested after they were handed over to the police.

The incident took place at 3 pm on Tuesday near Kharalwadi Bridge. According to the police, the Bajarang Dal members had got a tip off about the meat transportation after which they caught the tempo.

The members said that the beef was being transported from Ahmednagar to Mumbai. Acting on the information, a team trailed the temp as soon as it left Ahmednagar. The vehicle was halted near Kharalwadi Bridge and the Bajarang Dal members claimed that when they searched the tempo, they found beef.

The driver and his accomplice were taken along with the vehicle to Pimpri police station. The police sought the help of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to check the meat following which a case was registered under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Animal Prevention (Amendment) bill, 1995. Police have arrested two persons including the truck driver Abdul Rehman and his partner Ehsan Mohammad.

Assistant police inspector RR Thubal of Pimpri police station who is investigating the case said, "We have arrested two persons and we will be sending the sample of the meat to the forensic laboratory. We are now questioning the tempo driver to find out where the meat was being transported."
