Speculations are rife that senior leaders A Namassivayam and former Chief Minister V Vaithilingam would be the front runners, but the Congress high command is likely to take the final call on the matter. AICC General Secretary V Narayanasamy said that the question of finalising the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader would be decided by the AICC President Sonia Gandhi.

Namassivayam could not be reached for his comments. Congress won 15 seats and DMK secured two, the combine managed to oust the ruling AINRC which ended with eights seats in the 30-member assembly.
