Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said it was unfortunate that youth Congress leaders publicly slaughtered the calf when the Constitution seeks to prohibit cow slaughter.
The BJP today launched a scathing attack on the Congress over the public slaughter of a calf in Kerala by its youth wing leaders, calling the act "shameful" and "provocative" and wondering how far the party will go for political gains.
Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said it was unfortunate that youth Congress leaders publicly slaughtered the calf when the Constitution seeks to prohibit cow slaughter.
The controversial act, which forced the Congress to distance itself and take action against the leaders involved, has come handy for the saffron party ahead of its chief Amit Shah's three-day tour to the state starting June 2.
"This is shameful and in many ways provocative. Political opposition happens but it is unfortunate that such an act has been committed happened, that too by youth Congress workers.
It is unfortunate," Prasad told reporters.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath too used the incident to question the silence of opposition parties.
Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi had yesterday condemned the butchering to protest against the government's move to ban sale of cows for slaughter.
Terming the incident as "thoughtless and barbaric", he said that it was "unacceptable" to him and his party.
Taking a dig at Gandhi, Union minister Giriraj Singh said he was forced to issue the condemnation after sensing the public mood against it.
