Last month Captain Pawan Kumar turned 23 little realizing that it could be his last birthday. An intrepid commando, Captain Pawan embarked on a daredevil mission to storm the Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneur Development Institute (JKEDI) building to nut-out the highly motivated holed-up militants in the din of night at Sempora-Pampore in south Kashmir.

Living to his motto, Captain Pawan of 10 Para (Special Forces) fought a close quarter battle with the highly entrenched militants before receiving the volley of bullets. He was shifted to the hospital where he attained martyrdom.

“Captain Pawan Kumar of 10 Para attained martyrdom while leading his men from the front in a tricky deliberate operation against terrorists hiding in a government building,” said Colonel NN Joshi, defence spokesman at Srinagar.

Born on January 15, 1993 in Jind Haryana, Captain Pawan was the only child of his parents who graduated from National Defense Academy in 2013.

Having just three years of service, he was a very brave intrepid officer who had maturity beyond his years. Just before this operation, he participated in two successful anti militancy operation in which three ultras were killed. He received some injuries last month but after three days he resumed his duties and refused to go on sick leave.

“I had one child. I gave him to the army... to the nation. No father can be prouder,” said Sri Rajbir Singh, father of martyr Captain Pawan.

Like Captain Pawan, Lance Naik Om Prakash took on the militants head on before laying down his life in the line of duty. A highly decorated soldier, the 32-year-old Lance Naik Om Prakash hailed from Shimla in Himachal Pradesh and was serving in the army for the last 13 years.

“The martyr was awarded the Asadharan Suraksha Seva Praman Patra by the Prime Minister of India on August 15 2013,” said Colonel Joshi.

Captain Tushar Mahajan of 9 Para died on Sunday afternoon when he was busy in clearing the building from militants. A brave commando hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, he suffered grievous injuries and was shifted to hospital where he attained martyrdom. “Regret to inform that that another army personnel succumbed to his injuries. Twenty-six-year-old Capt Tushar hailed from Udhmpur (Jammu),” said Colonel NN Joshi, defence spokesman at Srinagar. The officer was leading from the front when he came under heavy fire from the highly entrenched militants inside the EDI building.
