Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC have been issued for Shamli district in the wake of protests by locals over alleged remarks by Bharatiya Kisan Union leaders, officials said.

District Magistrate NP Singh told reporters today that the move is aimed at maintaining the law and order situation in the district after locals held protests and burnt effigies of BKU leader Naresh Tikait over objectionable remarks which were allegedly made by him.

The remarks attributed to Tikait were purportedly made a few days back at a panchayat at Dulhera village. Police said that security has been tightened and extra personnel deployed in the Shahpur area of the district. The SP (rural) told reporters here on Monday that nobody would be allowed to create tension in the area and added that all precautionary measures are being taken to check any disruption in the law and order situation.
