Eminent scientists paid rich tributes to the late Dr Vikram Sarabhai, on the occasion of his birth anniversary on Thursday, even as the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) honoured five scientists to mark the occasion.

"If ISRO is doing well and has a great vision, it is only because the vision of its founder (Dr Vikram Sarabhai) is shared by one and all in the organisation," said ISRO chairman, Dr K Radhakrishnan, at a function organised to give away awards to five scientists.

He said that coming from an industrial family, Vikram Sarabhai brought science into enterprise and enterprise into science. He also said that Sarabhai continued to inspire ISRO and other organisations.

Besides the honoured scientists and their family members, present on the occasion was Mrinalini Sarabhai, wife of Dr Sarabhai and noted artiste. A large number of staff members of PRL, Space Applications Centre and ISRO, were also present at the function.

Describing Sarabhai as an innovative & creative scientist, and a person with a magnetic personality, the ISRO chairman said the Indian space research programme owed a lot to him. In his address, PRL director Prof JN Goswami also praised the vision of the Father of the Indian space research programme.

The ISRO chairman gave away awards to five scientists for their innovative scientific research in various fields. Each award carried a medal and a cash prize of Rs50,000.

Four scientists were given the Hari Om Ashram Prerit Dr Vikram Sarabhai Research Awards. They were: Prof J Chengalur from National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, Pune, Dr Prakash Chauhan from Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad, Prof Abhay Karandikar from IIT, Mumbai and Prof K Sridharan from IIT, Chennai. Dr AK Patra from National Atmospheric Research Laboratory, Gadanki (AP), was honoured with the PRL Award.

Earlier, a tree plantation ceremony was organised at the PRL campus, wherein the dignitaries and scientists planted trees. The brief award ceremony was followed by detailed presentation of award lectures by the recipients on their scientific contributions.
