The attempts to get dahi handi classified as a sport have met a dead end as a decision to this effect was taken by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan in a group of ministers' meeting last week.
How will we decide the rules of the game?, he reportedly asked. Sports Minister Padmakar Valvi and MoS (Sports) Uday Samant had introduced a proposal asking for dahi handi to be classified as a form of sport.
Chavan had more questions such as how the age limit of the participants will be decided and how winners of a particular event be declared. There were no answers forthcoming from the other ministers. And thus, the matter ended.
So dahi handi is now just a festival, not a sport.
