NEW DELHI: In a special gesture, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday received External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee at a military airport here when he was flown to the capital from West Bengal after sustaining injuries in a road accident.

Singh, who was on his way to Assam on an official visit, met his senior cabinet colleague at Palam airbase and enquired about his health and wished him a speedy recovery, officials said.

Earlier, Prime Minister's media adviser Sanjaya Baru had said Singh was "monitoring the care of Mukherjee".

Mukherjee suffered injuries to his head and other parts of the body when his car was hit by a truck while he was returning to Kolkata from Murshidabad last night.

He was flown to the capital from Kolkata in a special flight and admitted to the army's Research and Referral Hospital. Doctors attending to him said his condition is stable.
