President Kovind, PM Modi, oppn leaders pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on Martyrs Day

President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and opposition leaders paid tributes to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on Martyrs Day on Thursday. 

"On #MartyrsDay, President Kovind’s homage to #MahatmaGandhi: “In his final sacrifice, Gandhiji left a constant reminder for us: Unconditional love, especially for The Other. I am confident, more and more of us will discover Gandhiji’s true message,” President's office said in a tweet. 

In his tweet in Hindi, the Prime Minister said, “I salute to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi on his Martyrdom Day. The Personality, Ideas and Ideals of the Mahatma shall continue to inspire us to build a strong, able and prosperous New India.”

Amit Shah also tweeted in Hindi, "Mahatma Gandhi's teachings are as relevant today as they were decades ago. He inspired not only India but the entire world to follow the path of truth and non-violence. Today, Modi ji has done the work of realising Gandhiji's dream of clean India."

The opposition Congress made a series of posts on Twitter in its tribute to the Mahatma as its top leaders including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi made a beeline at Raj Ghat to pay respects to the Father of the Nation. 

"On the death anniversary of #MahatmaGandhi we celebrate Martyrs’ Day to honour the sacrifices made by him and countless other brave Indians. It is a day ripe to remember the ideals that these valiant souls sacrificed their lives for- Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity," Congress said in a tweet. 

Senior BJP leader LK Advani also paid tribute to Gandhi at Raj Ghat.
