His stylish batting style and agile fielding abilities define a new generation of Indian cricketers of that period, the President said.
Describing Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi as a "quintessential gentleman" who contributed immensely to cricket, President Pratibha Patil, Vice President Hamid Ansari and leaders of various political parties including Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Thursday condoled the death of the former Indian captain.
His stylish batting style and agile fielding abilities define a new generation of Indian cricketers of that period, the President said.
"I am deeply grieved to learn about the sad demise of Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, eminent cricketer and sportsperson. Pataudi's contributions to the game of cricket throughout his life as a player, captain, coach and analyst need no elaboration," Ansari said in his condolence message.
Pataudi, 70, who was known as 'Tiger' in the cricket fraternity, breathed his last at a hospital here this evening.
The Vice President said Pataudi embodied the quintessential gentleman of the game of cricket and promoted the game with all effort.
"His absence from the game of cricket and public life is a terrible loss. My wife joins me in sending our heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and the wide circle of his admirers and friends," Ansari said.
Sonia Gandhi said the void created by Pataudi's death in sports and public arena will be difficult to fill.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said on Twitter, "I am sorry to hear about the unfortunate demise of Tiger Pataudi. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family."
Her Rajya Sabha counterpart Arun Jaitley described Tiger Pataudi as one of the greatest captains India has ever produced.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also condoled Pataudi's death.
"Very sad to hear about the death of Tiger Pataudi. May Allah grant his soul eternal peace and his family strength to face this great loss," he said on Twitter.
Corporate Affairs Minister M Veerappa Moily also condoled Pataudi's death and described him as an ace cricketer and captain.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal have expressed their shock and grief over Pataudi's demise.
"It's not just a great loss for the sport, but to country as a whole," Parkash Badal said.
The Punjab Chief Minister described Pataudi as an "iconic figure who, through his sporting conduct, brought two things that the country badly needed that time from its heroes: courage and character".
"His loss would be severely felt even outside the world of cricket," he said.
Describing him as a gentleman-cricketer, who rose to the pinnacle of glory in Test cricket, Sukhbir Badal in his condolence message said that he would be remembered for retaining purity of the game.
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda also expressed grief and shock over Pataudi's death.
"In his death the country has lost a great cricketer," Hooda said.
