Speaking on the occasion, Mukherjee described Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as a great military genius, a brilliant strategist and a great ruler.

"Though Shivaji’s resources were limited, but he confidently faced the mighty Mughal Empire. He formed an army from hard working peasants. Chhatrapati Shivaji was a born leader with a personality that drew the best men to his side and commanded devoted service from his officers," Mukherjee added.

"Shivaji instilled a sense of self-respect in his subjects. He believed that good governance is no substitute for independence and sovereignty. Good governance is required, but the co-operation of the people is important. During his reign, certain basic principles were followed such as tolerance for all views, secularism, discipline, respect for women, self restraint, dedication and commitment to duty," said the President.

"His reign assured the protection of women’s honour. There was strict enforcement of morality in his camp. The three persons who had a great influence in shaping his thoughts were his legendary mother – Rajmata Jijabai, Sant Tukaram and Samartha Ramdas Swami," Mukherjee said.
