Believe it or not, but rats seem to be the biggest "beneficiaries" of total alcohol prohibition in Bihar. That because, if the government is the be believed, they are once again at the job of guzzling down seized beer in Bihar's Kaimur district.

The discovery was made by Kaimur district administration officials when they reached a godown in Kaimur to destroy the seized alcohol, as per the instructions of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Last month, at a review meeting of the state excise department, Nitish had ordered for destruction of all seized liquor by September 30.

What the officials saw in Kaimur was that several cartons containing beer cans had been gnawed at by the rats and the beer had spilled out. The visuals accessed by Zee Bihar Jharkhand also showed that most of the cartons and beer cans were nibbled at partially and beer had flowed out causing stains on the carton. Large holes are visible in the cartons, though sources said no rats were found at the godown during the destruction exercise.

Earlier in May 2017 too, the police had said that rats had consumed several thousand litres of seized alcohol, after the confiscated bottles had gone missing from the storerooms, following which a probe had been ordered into it. CM Nitish had later said the reports were an attempt to malign the state's image and had ordered for destroying all seized liquor publicly.

According to sub-divisional magistrate Kumari Anupam, several cartons of canned beer were damaged by rats while they were stored at a godown after their seizure. "Prima facie, it looks like the work of rats because only cans and cartons have been damaged. All the cans are in place (none were missing) but most were leaking and empty," she said and added that she would verify and submit a detailed report to the district magistrate for further action.
