As Nirav is reportedly in Brussels, Belgium — a member country of Interpol — the CBI expects that the law enforcement agencies over there might help in tracing and arresting him
The Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice (RCN) against fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi, his brother Neeshal Modi and close aide Parab Subhash Shankar in connection with the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam worth Rs 13,578 crore, revealed the CBI in a statement on Monday. The agency said, "The Interpol headquarters in Lyons, France has informed on June 29, 2018 that Red Notices (RCN) against Modi Nirav Deepak, Modi Neeshal Deepak and Parab Subhash Shankar have been opened."
The agency added that the National Central Bureau (Interpol), India had forwarded the request of CBI and other investigating agencies to Interpol at Lyons for the said notices against the accused.
Now, as the RCN has been issued, the law enforcement agencies of 192 member countries will immediately start looking for Nirav and others' and arrest him.
The agency also claimed that it had received input that Nirav is now in Brussels, Belgium. So, as Belgium is a member country of Interpol, the CBI is expecting that law enforcement agencies over there might help in tracing and arresting him.
In a letter on June 5, the Interpol had told CBI that Nirav travelled between United States, United Kingdom and Hong Kong on his Indian passport between March 15 and March 31. According to the Interpol, he travelled four times on that passport on March 15, March 28, March 30 and March 31. He last travelled as recently as June 12.
Also, even as there were reports that Nirav has multiple passports, which he was using to shuttle between countries, they were quashed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) last week. MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar had stated that no multiple passports were issued to the fugitive jeweller and stated that fresh passports were issued only after his previous passport was "physically cancelled".
