Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called upon the seven-member country grouping Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) to work together to “achieve peace, prosperity and happiness”. He arrived in Kathmandu to attend fourth BIMSTEC Summit, which includes — Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan, and Nepal — the countries dependent on the Bay of Bengal.

India over the years has been encouraging a sub-grouping of South Asian nations who are members of SAARC to isolate Pakistan, which has been hampering the economic progress of the region by blocking connectivity between Afghanistan and India.

Addressing the inaugural session, the PM emphasised on the need for connectivity. He said India was ready to host BIMSTEC nations to encourage coastal shipping and offered to host the BIMSTEC Start-up Conclave.
