Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday wrote to Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani to condole the loss of lives in avalanches in different parts of that country and offered help in rescue and relief efforts.

"I was deeply saddened at the massive loss of lives in avalanches in different parts of Afghanistan. This tragedy touches us even more because of the special bonds of affection and friendship between the people of India and Afghanistan," Modi wrote.

He conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and communities. "Please be assured that they are with us in our thoughts and prayers." The Prime Minister said he has great confidence in Ghani's leadership and the ability of the Afghan people to respond to this disaster.

"We stand ready to help in any way you desire with rescue and relief and to help people rebuild their lives," he added. Modi said he has asked Indian Ambassador to seek Ghani's guidance on assistance that might be required.
