Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold an interactive session on Tuesday with 172 newly-inducted IAS officers.

These officers of 2014 batch have started their career from today as assistant secretaries in 48 central government departments here. This is the second batch of IAS officers to have their first stint in the central government instead in their respective cadre states. They will work with the departments concerned for a period of three months.

"The officers have been assigned important desks related to policy and flagship programmes of the concerned ministries and departments. They are being groomed by principal mentors at the level of Secretary," a press release issued by Personnel Ministry said. During their three-month posting, they would be provided a holistic view of the functioning of the central government.
They will start their office work from day one and will dispose files related to their desk, it said.

"The objective of this initiative is to provide exposure of government of India functioning to the IAS officers at a very early stage in their career. As primary implementers in the field, this exposure would also facilitate a broader macro perspective even when the officers work in the field," the release said. Personnel Ministry officials said these officials have been briefed on Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme, eGovernance and on promotion of 'space technology-based tools and applications in governance and development'.

Last year as well, as many as 158 IAS officers of 2013 batch were appointed as assistant secretaries in different ministries as part of a first-of-its-kind initiative by the Union government to groom bureaucrats at the Centre before they move out to their respective state cadres. As per existing rules, IAS officers were eligible to come on central deputation only after completing nine years service at their respective cadre.
