Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit his parliamentary constituency Varanasi today to celebrate his 68th birthday with schoolchildren. The Prime Minister, who will stay in Varanasi for two days - September 17 and 18 - will also offer prayers at the famous Kashi Vishwanath temple during his visit and address a public gathering.

This is the last birthday of Modi before the general elections and the BJP wants to send a message in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh through the prime ministers' visit.

After coming to power in May 2014, Modi had celebrated his birthday in Gujarat. Next year, on his 65th birthday, Modi went about his official duties and began the day visiting an exhibition commemorating 50 years of the 1965 Indo-Pak war in New Delhi.

The next year, he returned home and sought blessings of his mother on the special occasion as he turned 66. On his 67th birthday, he inaugurated the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Narmada district's Kevadia in Gujarat.

This will be the first birthday of the Prime Minister that he will spend outside Delhi or Gujarat since he came to power in 2014.

On Monday, Modi will visit Narur village, where he will interact with children of a primary school, aided by non-profit organisation "Room to Read". Later, he will interact with students of Kashi Vidyapeeth and children assisted by them on the premises of Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW).

On his 68th birthday, the prime minister will watch a 32-minute film called "Chalo Jeete Hain" with schoolchildren.

He is also likely to inaugurate several development projects worth crores of rupees, district officials said.

Modi will inaugurate or lay the foundation of various development projects, cumulatively worth more than Rs 500 crore, according to a statement by the prime minister's office (PMO). The event will be held at the amphitheatre of Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

Among the projects to be inaugurated by Modi are Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS) for Puraani Kashi and an Atal Incubation Centre at BHU.

Among the projects for which the foundation stones will be laid is the Regional Ophthalmology Centre at BHU. The prime minister will also address a gathering, the statement said.

A special cleanliness drive will be launched and health camps will also be organised in the town, the official said.

"District officials are holding meetings regarding the visit and all the security arrangements are being made for the various events in which he will take part, though the final itinerary of the prime minister's visit is awaited," he said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held meetings with the district officials in Varanasi on Wednesday and reviewed the preparations for the prime minister's two-day visit, sources said.
