Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Thursday warned the BJP to refrain from using the name of Sant Kabir Das for political gains as Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a mega rally in Maghar town of Sant Kabir Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh.

Kabir breathed his last and was buried in this eastern UP town. Modi was on a first-ever visit by a prime minister to the town to pay respects to the 16th-century mystic poet on his 500th death anniversary. Modi offered a 'chadar' at the Mazar' of Sant Kabir Das and also laid the foundation stone for the Sant Kabir Academy.

In a statement issued after the Prime Minister's rally, Mayawati alleged that the BJP was indulging in cheap vote-bank politics by using the name of Kabir. “Laying the foundation stone for setting up Kabir Academy in Maghar was nothing but an attempt to divert people’s attention from government failure to speed up development in Eastern Uttar Pradesh,” said Mayawati.

“The BJP remembers Sant Kabir Das now when Lok Sabha polls are around the corner. Why it did not do anything for the development of Maghar in the last four years,” she asked.

Mayawati claimed that her government had renamed Khalilabad as Sant Kabir Nagar to pay respect to the saint. “My government had also passed a proposal to create a separate state of Purvanchal but the Central government is sitting over it till date,” she said.

“The Modi government should answer the people why it has done nothing for Sant Kabir Das ji till date. It is a cheap political gimmick to make political gains in his name,” she charged.

The former UP chief minister further alleged that massive funds were spent on Modi's event at Maghar, where

The BSP Supremo pointed out that Sant Kabir Das is immortal because of his teachings, above caste and religious lines. “He did not need any commendation from the BJP. People now understand BJP's politics of convenience and they will not be impressed by any such BJP acts,” she said.

Earlier, speaking at Maghar, Modi lauded Kabir saying he envisaged Lord Ram as an ideal king. Modi described Kabir's imagination as democratic and panth nirpeksh (secular, denomination-neutral).

"After Kabir, it was Raidas, Mahatma Phule, Mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar who showed the way to eradicate social inequalities existing in society," he said.
