PM Modi expresses grief over demise of senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the demise of senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes who passed away on Monday. 

"Saddened by the demise of Rajya Sabha MP Shri Oscar Fernandes Ji. In this sad hour, my thoughts and prayers are with his family and well-wishers. May his soul rest in peace," a tweet from his official Twitter handle read.

Oscar Fernandes was battling illness for the last one month and was undergoing treatment at Mangaluru hospital. According to the information given by the hospital, he passed away at the age of 80 due to heart attack.

He had suffered a serious injury on the head after he fell while doing Yoga at his home in July and since which he was being treated at the hospital. In his 50-year-long political career, Oscar Fernandes has been a Union Minister and MP several times.

Fernandes was considered close to the Gandhi family and he has played important responsibilities in the party and the UPA government. During the UPA Government, Fernandes was also a road transport minister and currently was a Rajya Sabha MP from the party. He has also been a parliamentary secretary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

In the year 1980, Oscar Fernandes was elected MP from Karnataka's Udupi Lok Sabha seat and after that, he won the elections many times. In 1998, Congress made him a Rajya Sabha MP.
