"Heart-rending funeral in Australia. Phil Hughes, we will miss you. Your game and exuberance won you fans all over! RIP," Prime Minister Modi tweeted.

Twenty five-year-old Hughes passed away last Thursday after being hit by a bouncer at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The South Australian batsman, who was pushing for a Test recall against India in Brisbane next week, was knocked out after the ball made an impact under his helmet behind his left ear.

Australian skipper Michael Clarke claimed that the way people around the world had come together to show their support in the wake of Hughes' death was the definition of the spirit of cricket.

According to reports, around 5000 people attended the young batsman's funeral.

The notable attendees at Hughes' funeral included Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, opposition leader Bill Shorten, NSW Premier Mike Baird, the Australian Test squad, the Australian women's cricket team, legendary leg spinner Shane Warne, former New Zealand great Sir Richard Hadlee, former Australian players Glenn McGrath and Adam Gilchrist and former West Indian cricket captain and batsman Brian Lara.

Indian cricketers Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Indian Cricket Team Director Ravi Shastri were also present at the funeral.
