Unidentified persons hurled petrol bombs at the residence of senior Congress leader and former Union minister EVKS Elangovan here, police said today.

Three petrol bombs were hurled at Elangovan's Adyar residence late last night. The attack came hours after Elangovan tore down some posters of slain LTTE leader V Prabhakaran at Erode yesterday.

Elangovan was not present in the house when the petrol bombs were hurled, police said, adding some furniture was damaged in the incident.

Elangovan, known for his hardline stand against LTTE for its involvement in the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, had removed posters and banners eulogising the leader of the banned organisation, put up by pro-LTTE elements on the occasion of Prabhakaran's birthday.

Prabhakaran was killed in a Sri Lankan army offensive in May this year.
