West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Friday that her party would field candidates in Assam and Jharkhand in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. She announced it at the extended core committee meeting at Netaji Indoor Stadium and along with it she assigned different party leaders to take care of different states.

"Firhad Hakim will look after Tripura and Assam. Manipur and Mizoram will be taken care of by Derek O Brien and Sabyasachi Dutta. Jharkhand will be monitored by Arup Biswas, Malay Ghatak and Jiten Tiwari. Odisha will be looked after by Suvendu Adhikary. I have asked Dinesh Trivedi to take care of Maharashtra," Mamata said.

Mamata, who wishes to play a pivotal role in bringing together all the Opposition parties to create an anti-BJP front, said that nearly all the parties had confirmed that they would be present at his rally at the Brigade Parade Ground on January 19. She told party leaders to put up meetings at booth levels and create awareness to attract a record crowd at the rally which will be a show of strength.

"Other than one or two, all parties have confirmed that they would be present. Block level presidents should ensure that meetings at the booth level should be carried out and each booth should have about 30 per cent graffiti," Mamata said.

She criticised the BJP government at the Centre saying that the party was a 'history changer, note changer, name changer but definitely not a game changer'. She alleged that the BJP intended to tamper with 40 per cent of the EVMs in the Lok Sabha polls and cautioned party workers to be on their guard.

Scoffing the proposed rath yatra of the state BJP, she said it was rather 'Ravana yatra' because the rath they would be travelling in, would be air-conditioned vehicles with all modern amenities. "After their yatra, our workers will take out pavitra yatra or shanty yatra through the same route," she said.

She also toed the lines of N Chandrababu Naidu-led Andhra Pradesh government in withdrawing the general consent of raids carried out by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raids. "Chandrababu Naidu has done the right thing in saying he wouldn't allow CBI in his state," she added.

Congress MLA and leader of the Opposition Abdul Mannan said that whether Congress will partake in the January 19 rally or not will depend on the decision taken by the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

CPI(M) leader Rabin Deb said that they would not participate in the rally and that other Left Front allies such as the RSP and the CPI leaders too had distanced from it.

Mamata is also scheduled to meet Naidu on November 19 ahead of his meeting on November 22 where he has invited Opposition leaders.

Reacting to Mamata's statement, BJP national secretary and former state president Rahul Sinha said Mamata's 'pavitra yatra' will end up to be a 'samsan yatra'. "She is rattled by the BJP's plan to put up a rally at Brigade which will be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier she tried to counter rallies of Amit Shah and Modi and failed. This one too, will fall flat on its face," Sinha told media persons. Calling the TMC party a 'dustbin' he said all the refuses from different parties were dumped there.

He said that it was natural that Mamata would support Naidu's stand on CBI because her party was a corrupt one and that is why she is afraid of the CBI. Reacting to her allegations of BJP intending to tampering with EVMs, he said, "She knows that the election would be carried out with the help of Central forces and she would not be able to rig those. That is why she is making a provision of 40 per cent beforehand because she knows that BJP will surely gain in the Lok Sabha elections."
