Since last few months, Charminar was being renovated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Last night, a chunk of the ornamental stucco work of one the minarets fell off. The monument has four minarets after which it is named. Reports said the damage was on the minaret facing Mecca Masjid side.

The incident took place at around 11:30 pm when a portion of the stucco work detached from the granite slab. While the incident sent panic among the people around the monument, no injuries were reported.

A large number of onlookers gathered near the monument, police cordoned off the area to keep people off. A team of officials of ASI is likely to visit the site today.

Charminar is more than 400 years old and is made of limestone. It was built in 1591 by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth king of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, the rulers of the kingdom of Golkonda.

The 428-year-old stricture stands at a staggering 160 feet from ground level.

According to an IANS report, the ASI had undertaken restoration work on the monument sometime back.
