Just two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi pleaded for a cashless economy, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan inaugurated 17 digital payment facility spots in Parliament House on Wednesday. The digital payment facility has been introduced in all canteens. The new facility may, however, kick off only by Friday or next Monday as Parliament Food Committee Chairman Jithendra Reddy said it will take three days to train the staff to use the machines.
He said in the wake of cash crunch, people have been finding it difficult to make payments in Parliament canteens. “Sometimes, there is no cash to pay or sometimes there is no change available with the canteen cashier. Card payment will address that problem,” said Reddy, Lok Sabha member from Telangana Rashtra Samithi. The canteens in the Parliament House are run by the Railways, serving on an average 4,500 people during Parliament sessions.
