While the petition holds the states responsible for not maintaining law and order, the Karni Sena has been accused of spreading violence and vandalising parts of the state
A contempt petition has been filed against four states in the Supreme Court for failing in their duty to maintain law and order over the screening of Padmaavat. Another contempt petition has been filed against the Karni Sena for violating the apex court's order.
On November 19, the apex court had stayed notifications and orders issued by several state governments banning the screening of Padmaavat, which is being opposed by some Rajput groups over the alleged wrongful portrayal of queen Padmavati played by Deepika Padukone.

Despite the relief, the film is facing stiff resistance with several theatres in refusing to screen it. A combative Sanjay Singh Rathore, president of the Mahakaal Sena, said, "Law and order ki asi ki taisi (we do not care about law and order). We will not allow the film to release in Gujarat."
On Thursday, fearing clashes and protests by Karni Sena activists, a mall in Gurugram has cancelled the screening of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film.
According to news agency ANI, PVR Cinemas in Gurugram's Ambience Mall put out a circular stating that the screening of the movie had been cancelled.
Earlier, chaos reigned as Shree Rajput Karni Sena supporters resorted to violent protests across the country, a day before the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film Padmavaat. Despite prohibitory orders, locals watched helplessly as both terrified teachers and students riding in a school bus belonging to the GD Goenka school in Gurugram ducked as Karni Sena protesters hurled stones at the bus on the Sohna Road on Wednesday. The attack came after protesters had burnt down a state-run bus that was next to the school bus.

In Ahmedabad, the Gujarat Multiplex Owners Association stated that Padmavaat would not be screened in any multiplex or single screen in the state till the row over the film was resolved. Earlier, a mob estimated estimated at around 2,000 people went on the rampage targeting three multiplexes in the city. The association said the decision had been taken for the safety of customers as well as to protect their property.
At a press conference in Jaipur, Karni Sena chief patron Lokendra Singh Kalvi insisted that a "janta curfew" would be imposed on theatres screening the movie. Denying rumours that some Karni Sena members had already seen the film, He also sought to pin the blame for the widespread violence, on Bhansali.
