A total of 86.16 lakh smart ration cards, out of 1.91 crore existing family cards, have been issued in Tamil Nadu, State Food and Civil Supplies Minister, R Kamaraj said today.

Being the dream project of former chief minister Jayalalithaa, the government was taking steps to complete issuance of smart cards on a war footing, he said.

As far as Coimbatore was concerned, 3.52 lakh smart cards have been issued, Kamaraj said.

He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting to review the progress of issue of smart cards, among others.

Municipal Administration minister S P Velumani, District collector T N Hariharan and senior officials from food and supplies department from eight western districts also participated.
