The district administration here has stopped over 8,000 old age pensions allegedly being paid either to ineligible or dead persons.

Following an inquiry it was found that 8005 old age pensions were being drawn by either ineligible persons or in the name of dead persons and they have been immediately stopped, district magistrate Sachidanand Duby said.

The DM has also stopped the salaries of 30 inquiry officers who had to submit the status report of old age pensioners and directed the chief development officer (CDO) to conduct an inquiry into the matter.

"The CDO has also been directed to initiate a recovery process of the pension amount and take action against the guilty," Duby said.

The CDO JB Singh said recovery notices were being issued.
