Altogether 1429 people were killed in insurgency related violence since May 2006 when Tarun Gogoi government took charge of the state for the second term, Assam assembly was informed today.

Giving a break-up, home minister, Rockybul Hussain said in a written reply to Ramendra Narayan Kalita (AGP) that 854 civilians, 481 insurgents, 85 policemen and nine jawans were killed in the violence.

Besides 2,716 civilians, 204 policemen and 35 jawans were injured in the violence, Hussain said. Insurgents also kidnapped 334 people including 35 commoners and five policemen during the period.

The minister said in reply to Girindra Kumar Barua (AGP) that 170 ULFA, 936 NDFB, 502 Dima Halam Daogah (DHD), 575 Adivasi Cobra Militants, 500 Birsa Commando Force and 282 United Peoples Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) extremists had laid down arms since 2001.

So far, 847 surrendered militants including those before 2001 had been drafted in various paramilitary forces, Hussain said.
