Security forces have placed defence bases in Jammu and Punjab on orange alert after intelligence reports suggested a potential attack on the defence bases in the region by terror agents. "The defence bases in and around Punjab and Jammu are on high alert. The Indian Air Force has put its airbases in Punjab including Pathankot and Jammu on an orange alert," government sources told the news agency ANI. The orange alert is the second-highest level of alert in a security situation (second only to the red alert).

According to intelligence reports, the inputs regarding the potential attack was received on Wednesday morning and since then the defence bases have been put on the orange alert pertaining to the threat level. "The inputs were received by forces today morning after which they are taking all precautions to protect the defence bases," added government sources.

This bit of news comes off as especially alarming since the bases were only put off high alert recently after the security forces had decided that the possibility of an immediate assault was low. The alert levels were raised again today after the intel. The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Punjab regions have remained on high alert ever since August 5, when the BJP-led central government decided to abrogate Article 370 from the Indian Constitution, thereby ending the special status granted to the state.

In September 2019, intelligence agencies had issued a warning saying that a module of eight to ten Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists have infiltrated India and are planning to launch terror attacks on defence bases. The input suggested that the JeM terrorists are planning to carry out a suicide attack against air force bases in and around Jammu and Kashmir.
