Only 164 diamond units registered in Surat
Diamond industry in Surat is considered to be largest in the world, but another side of rosy picture is that only handful are registered in the government books and there is hardly any mention of labourers working in the industry.

Diamond industry in Surat is considered to be largest in the world, but another side of rosy picture is that only handful are registered in the government books and there is hardly any mention of labourers working in the industry.
Taking the matter seriously, Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and state government have initiated process to create awareness among diamond unit owners to get their units registered.
There are more than 4,000 diamond units in Surat, with annual turnover of more than Rs80,000 crore. Despite being massive in size and offering employment to lakhs of people, industry is still unorganised, though there is a symbolic control of the state and the union administration. Industry falls under the category of SMEs, but it hardly enjoys any facility or subsidy provided by the government. The reason being out of 4,000, only 164 are registered with District Industries Department (DIC, Gujarat).
"The reason behind the low registration figure is that a majority of the unit holders are economically capable of running their units and don't seek any kind of help from outside. Again, there is no tradition among diamond units to maintain books of account, which is required to get registered," Dinesh Navadia, president of Surat Diamond Association (SDA), said.
Navadia was speaking at seminar organised by GJEPC, SDA and Indian Diamond Institute (IDI) at Surat. He also demanded separate ministry for diamond sector that can look into problems faced by the industry.
Sabyasachi Ray, executive director of GJEPC said that diamond industry contributes significantly in exports and getting registered with government can provide unit owners many benefits.
"Diamond units can take advantage of subsidies and loans provided by state and central governments. China is trying to enter into diamond markets and to be prepared for it diamond industry has to be organised. Currently, no accurate data pertaining to the industry is available, which is surprising. Government doesn't know how many workers are employed in the industry," Ray added.
