An online facility will now help the civic body to trace and keep a check on the outbreak of water-borne and vector-borne diseases in over 500 slums of the city.
TARU Leading Edge, (NGO) has approached the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) seeking its nod to conduct a survey under its demonstration project in slums and low-lying areas of the city. With the help of IT-based technique, a data of water-logging and contaminated water in these slums will be prepared under integrated disease surveillance programme (IDSP). NGO will render its service free of cost and will cover 599 slums of the city in its survey on android based tablet.
The date will be uploaded on IMC's server that will further help the civic body to keep a check on water-borne and vector-borne diseases due to water logging and contaminated water.
As per NGO officials, the data will be very useful for the slum-dwellers as well as for the corporation as it would help to check the possibility of water-borne and vector-borne disease during rainy season to a great extent.
On IMC's consent, the NGO is also ready to collect basic information including the conditions of roads, drinking water and sewerage facilities in the slums and make available the same to the authority. The NGO will carry out the survey under the aegis of Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN).
Climate change risks
Rainfall variability and temperature increase are forecasted, with more intense/frequent storms, leading to increased vector and water-borne diseases which result due to water logging in rainy season.
If required, the collection of information over the time will also be used in understanding the linkages between the climate, environment and specific vector-borne diseases prevalent in Indore.
