BANGALORE: One person was killed and three wounded when the police opened fire to quell communal violence during a RSS function in the cantonment area here on Sunday, two days after protests against the execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

"One person was killed and three others have received (bullet) injuries," Bangalore City Police Commissioner N Achut Rao said.

Tension prevailing in Shivajinagar and Bhartinagar areas after a protest against the hanging of Saddam Hussein turned violent on Friday flared up on Sunday during a procession organised as part of "Viraat Hindu Samjotsav" to mark the birth centenary of RSS' second chief Golwalkar in Halasur.

Trouble broke out when some splinter groups from the procession heading towards the venue of the "Viraat Hindu Samjotsav" attacked buses and other vehicles, damaging scores of them, Rao said. Several shops were set ablaze.
