Even before the 2010 IAS topper Dr Shah Faesal starts his political innings, a fierce war-of-words has broken out between former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah and Minister of State (MoS) in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Dr Jitendra Singh over the issue of terror.

The verbal duel started when Dr Singh challenged Shah Faesal to show the courage and conviction to condemn and denounce the act of terrorism and perpetrators of terrorism.

The 2010 topper on Wednesday announced his resignation from the civil service as a mark of protest against the "unabated killings in Kashmir, lack of any sincere reach-out from the centre and the marginalisation of Indian Muslims at the hands of Hindutava forces".

"You can't enjoy the protection of security forces against a potential possible or possible terrorist attack on yourself and at the same time hesitate or not courageous enough to point out at a terrorist as a terrorist but find a soft target in an Indian state which is tolerant and gives leverage for the expression of your opinion," said Dr Singh.

Minutes later, Omar took to Twitter to remind the union minister that the 2010 civil service topper is a victim of terror as his father was gunned down by militants.

"Dr Sahib, Shah Faesal's father was killed by militants but I don't expect you to bother to educate yourself before you speak. No one more than Faesal knows the pain and suffering militancy & violence have brought upon Kashmir and its people," Omar said.

Coming from a highly respected and educated family, Faesal suffered a personal tragedy when his father Ghulam Rasool Shah, a revered school teacher, was gunned down by unidentified militants in 2002. Faesal, hailing from remote Sogam-Lolaab in the border district of Kupwara, later migrated to Srinagar where he passed his MBBS from Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Medical College.

Earlier Faesal said it has been a storm of abuse and adulation, and hundreds and thousands of people reacted to his resignation in hundreds and thousands of ways.

"I totally expected this. As of now, I have quit the service. What I am going to do hereafter also depends on what people of Kashmiri want me to do. More so the youth. I have an idea how I can do it. I am sure you have ideas too and you want me to factor those ideas in before I take a final decision," he wrote on Facebook.

Faesal, who is likely to join National Conference and contest the Lok Sabha polls from Baramulla constituency, was planning to hold a youth convention in Srinagar on Friday. However, he later cancelled the event due to the inclement weather but promised to hold it soon.

Why He Quit

  • The 2010 topper on Wednesday announced his resignation from the civil service
