A day after BSP supremo Mayawati buried the hatchet with SP patron Mulayam Singh Yadav by sharing dais at Mainpuri, she took the newfound solidarity forward at Rampur on Saturday. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister held a joint rally with SP chief and Mulayam's son Akhilesh Yadav, seeking votes for senior SP leader Mohammed Azam Khan, who recently courted controversy for derogatory remarks against BJP's Jaya Prada.

Mayawati and junior Yadav appeared together at Mahatma Gandhi Stadium in Rampur on Saturday. They later held another rally together at Bantigarh Chauraha in Firozabad to take on the estranged brother of Mulayam and rebel Shivpal Yadav who broke away from Samajwadi Party and formed his own faction. The duo lent support to Khan who made public appearance after the three-day ban imposed by the Election Commission on Monday for making misogynistic comments against Jaya Prada ended. The SP had vehemently defended Khan for his comments that caused a political storm. Running to his defence, Akhilesh had said, "He was talking about someone else. We are Samajwadis, we never use foul language for women."

The SP leader who is notorious for taking impolite jibes at rivals, however, pleaded innocence at the rally, claiming that he was being hounded like a terrorist. "They are treating me as if I am the biggest terrorist in this world. Had it been within the limits of their power, the administration would have openly killed me by firing a shot at me," he said.

The BSP chief and the SP patriarch Mulayam Singh were seen in one frame on Saturday at joint SP-BSP rally, ending decades of political acrimony and personal bitterness. Mayawati waxed eloquent while seeking votes for Mulayam whom she hailed as the "real and true leader".
