Battle of titans
North East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency is witnessing a battle of titans in this Lok Sabha elections. Longest serving Delhi CM and currently, the Congress state President Sheila Dikshit is contesting against incumbent MP and BJP Delhi chief Manoj Tiwari. Also in the fray is AAP's Dilip Pandey.
Post-delimitation in 2008, North East Delhi constituency was carved out. In 2009, Congress JP Agarwal won comfortably against BJP's BL Sharma. But the situation changed dramatically in five years time. In 2014, Manoj Tiwari won in a canter against AAP's Anand Kumar by 1.44 lakh votes. In 2015 though, AAP swept the assembly segments under North East Delhi. The only thing constant in all this was Congress steadily losing out support. This time though Sheila Dikshit is hoping to reverse the trend when over 22.89 lakh voters exercise their franchise on May 12.
Congress will be hoping that it will get a big chunk of the minority votes which is around 23% of the electorate. Purvanchalis and migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar also constitute close to 40% voters in North East Delhi. With them, Manoj Tiwari, who is a Poorvanchali has a very clear connect. Some of the issues which plague this largely semi-urban constituency are connectivity hitches, lack of proper roads, shortage of water. Thee are close to 270 unauthorised colonies and 46 slum clusters in this constituency and each party is promising development in those areas.
Tiwari has promised pucca houses for slum dwellers. AAP's Pandey is fighting in the plank of separate statehood. Dikshit who fought her first election albeit unsuccessfully from East Delhi, which also included regions under this constituency earlier wants to bring back the dominant days of Congress. She is banking on her personal goodwill among the people as three-time CM to pass the stern Tiwari test. The assembly segments under North East Delhi are Burari, Babarpur, Ghonda, Gokalpur, Karawal Nagar, Mustafabad, Rohtash Nagar, Seemapuri, Seelampur and Timarpur. It's going to be a tight contest and how much AAP cuts anti-BJP vote here may finally determine the winner.
