Scholars Srishti and Siddharth - the two scholars who were part of a seven-member delegation were reportedly denied visa.

Ram Madhav, National General Secretary for the Bharatiya Janata Party and a director of the Foundation had tweeted: "It was supposed to be an academic delegation. After the denial of visas to two researchers, the Foundation called off the visit." Madhav, however, was not part of the delegation.

However, the spokesperson at Chinese Embassy said that none of the visa applications were denied.

"The Chinese side always welcomes and supports the exchanges of think tanks between China and India. It is not true that the source of India Foundation claims that “two of its junior research members were denied visas and the visit to China of the delegation has been cancelled," the spokesperson said.

The delegation has reportedly reached Fudan University for the event.

According to India Foundation, Fudan University had approached them for a bilateral interaction agreement in 2014. Since then, delegations from either side have visited each other's countries twice.

Apart from Madhav, India Foundation has a number of heavyweights on its board of directors, including Union Ministers Suresh Prabhu, Nirmala Sitharaman, Jayant Sinha, M J Akbar, Prasar Bharti Chairman A Surya Prakash, columnist and Rajya Sabha member (BJP) Swapan Dasgupta, Nalanda University Vice-Chancellor Sunaina Singh and NSA Ajit Doval's son Shaurya Doval, among others.
