There is no race for prime mnistership in the BJP and senior leader LK Advani is the saffron party's candidate for the top post, party president Rajnath Singh said on Thursday.

"There is no race here (in the BJP). LK Advani is the prime minister candidate," he said in a reply to a question whether he was in the race for BJP's prime ministerial candidate post.

Rajnath's comments came close on the heels of remarks by senior BJP leaders Arun Shourie, Arun Jaitley and Venkaiah Naidu that they would be happy to see Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as PM candidate even though they made it clear that Advani will be the party's prime ministerial candidate for the current poll.

Singh said he would work for the party and he will not join the cabinet if BJP-led NDA comes to power.

"I will work for the organisation," he said in reply to a question.

Singh's term as party president comes to an end in January 2010.
