Night curfew imposed in Punjab: Know what's allowed, what's not

The night curfew will be in place from 9 pm to 5 am. The Punjab government also banned political gatherings till April 30.

Amid a spike in the COVID cases, the Punjab government on Wednesday (April 7) imposed a night curfew in the state with immediate effect till April 30. As per the order from the state government, the night curfew will be in place from 9 pm to 5 am. The state government also banned political gatherings till April 30 to bring the situation under control. 

A night curfew was imposed in Chandigarh starting Wednesday, from 10 pm to 5 am. According to the Chandigarh administration, no gatherings, parties, non-essential activities will be allowed during the period.

"In Punjab, around 4.5 per cent of deaths are reported due to COVID. Compared to Punjab, active cases and death toll are very low in Delhi and Haryana. It is satisfactory that the share of RT-PCR tests in average daily tests has increased to 76 per cent in Punjab," Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan had said. The teams will assist state health departments and district administrations in surveillance, control and containment measures. They will be submitting daily reports to the state government and Union health ministry, Bhushan had said.

Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab have shown a steep rise in the daily new cases. The number of new coronavirus cases in India hit a record daily high since the outbreak of the pandemic with over 1.15 lakh new infections being reported in a span of 24 hours, pushing the nationwide COVID-19 tally to 1,28,01,785, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday. The single-day rise in coronavirus cases breached the 1-lakh mark for the second time in three days.
