"As a country that values & fosters unity in diversity, India would urge that issues of identity & culture are best addressed within the constitutional framework and with respect for national integrity," MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.

On October 27, tens of thousands of independence supporters massed near the Catalan parliament cheered with joy today after majority separatist lawmakers voted to declare independence from Spain and proclaim a republic.

However, a few hours later the Central government in Madrid sacked Catalonia's regional government, dissolved the Catalan parliament and called a snap election in the region for Dec. 21, in a bid to draw a line under Spain's worst political crisis in 40 years.

The Spanish government has warned to jail sacked Catalan president, Carles Puigdemont, within two months, for his role in the Catalonia's unilateral declaration of independence.

The warning came after thousands took to the streets of Barcelona on Sunday under the Spanish flag for a unity rally after Catalan MPs vote for independence two days ago, reports the Guardian.
