CHENNAI: About 1.12 lakh vans and 2.8 lakh trucks will be off the road from the midnight of January 20 as part of a nationwide indefinite strike called by the All-India Motor Transport Congress.

Tamil Nadu Van Owners Association President R Kamalakannan and Secretary R Ravi said on Thursday the strike was to demand immediate rollback of the hike in the third party premium for goods carriers from Rs 3,000 to Rs 9,000.

"The Insurance Regulatory Development Authority has increased the third party premium by 150 per cent, which is unprecedented. The van and lorry owners are put to great hardship because of the hike," they said.

The strike would continue till the IRDA rolled back the hike, they said and added the State Lorry Owners Federation at Namakkal had also decided to participate in the stir.

About 45 lakh vans and lorry owners would participate in the strike all over the country.

Kamalakannan said the Van Owners Association and the Chennai Mini Transporters Association would observe a day-long fast in front of Valluvarkottam, a monument in the city, to condemn the hike and demand its immediate rollback.
